A Restaurant Review - Sotto Sopra

January 12, 2015

I have always planned on including restaurant reviews as part of my wanderlust journey and I can't believe it's taken me this long to start! I keep track of the restaurants we visit and make sure to take lots of pictures but I just haven’t put any together - until now. And I have decided to start with our favorite, Sotto Sopra.

Sotto Sopra was recommended to me by a co-worker when we first moved to Baltimore. My expectations were set pretty high so I definitely did not want it to disappoint. And disappointment was the farthest thing from the truth. It was everything we had expected and hoped... And more.

When we arrived, we fell in love immediately. It was small, cozy, intimate and fragrant.

Our server was very knowledgeable and had great recommendations. Everything is made in-house, including the pasta noodles. The lighting in the restaurant is dimmed which makes the atmosphere sophisticated and even romantic however, it did not compliment my pictures below.

To start off, their focaccia is to die for. I try not to fill up on bread before dinner but they make it next to impossible to resist!

On our first visit, I started with a special, the deconstructed salad. My husband started with one of his all time favorites, caprese salad (topped with an olive crostino).

Following our appetizers, I ordered one of their signature dishes, Sacchetti Di Zucca Con Salsiccia. This is a pumpkin filled ravioli type pasta in a cream sauce with sausage and topped with crumbled amaretti cookies. My husband went a bit more traditional and ordered the Ravioli Dell'Amore, a spinach and ricotta ravioli with tomato sauce.

It is hard for me to pass up dessert and I was very full but I had to have something sweet to finish off a fabulous dinner.

I don't have a picture however, I had a variety of their daily gelato and sorbetto to go along with my cappuccino.

  • Our server was perfect - knowledgeable, attentive but not too pushy.
  • All of our dishes were fresh, the appropriate temperature and full of flavor.
  • The atmosphere was great - not too loud or crowded and decorated nicely with murals along the walls.
We have been back Sotto Sopra a number of times and I made sure to take our guests from out of town there.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in a heartbeat. Everything we have ordered has exceeded our expectations and holds true to their reputation. Their cocktails are also delicious and they have an extensive wine list, which the servers are also very knowledge about.

Below are a few of the other dishes we have ordered while visiting.

Calamari Fritti with Garlic Aioli and Spicy Marinara
Pan-seared Grouper with Butternut Squash Puree, Brown-butter Ricotta Gnocchi and Carrot-parsnip-zucchini Slaw
Pork Ossobuco with Mushroom Risotto
Veal Agnolotti with Sauteed Spinach, Truffle Oil and Veal Demi Glace
